Solar in Inverness: what we see on the ground

Inverness's housing runs from stone villas in Crown and Lochardil, bungalows across Culloden and Smithton, and large new-build areas at Milton of Leys and Inshes. Highland homes see very long summer days, with generation from 4am to 10pm in June, and higher electricity use in winter, which is exactly the profile a battery plus a smart off-peak tariff is built for. Highland Council permitted-development rules are the same as the rest of Scotland.

Whatever the roof, the process is the same. We lay the panels out on aerial imagery of your house, size the battery from your bills, and send one fixed price within 48 hours. Only when you approve the design do we book a survey, and only after the survey do we take a deposit.

Home battery storage in Inverness

Most Inverness households use their electricity in the evening, after the panels have stopped. A 5.1 kWh or 10.2 kWh battery keeps the day's surplus for the 5 to 10pm peak, and in winter charges overnight on an off-peak tariff at around a quarter of the 26.32p price-cap rate. Nearly every system we design from Culloden to Inshes includes storage for that reason. More on batteries

Planning and permissions with The Highland Council

Roof-mounted solar on a house is permitted development across Scotland, including Inverness, provided the panels project no more than one metre and the building isn't listed. Conservation areas carry extra conditions, so we check your address against The Highland Council's conservation-area maps before quoting and prepare any drawings needed. Your install is also notified to the local network operator as part of the job.

Grants and VAT for Inverness homeowners

There is no Home Energy Scotland grant or loan for solar PV. It was withdrawn on 6 June 2024. What Inverness homeowners do get is 0% VAT on the whole installation until 31 March 2027, Smart Export Guarantee payments of 15 to 25p a unit for exported power, and for eligible households ECO4 support until the end of 2026. Inverness questions
Do you install solar panels anywhere in Inverness?

Yes. We cover every Inverness postcode in IV1–IV3 and the surrounding Highlands area, from Culloden to Inshes. Inverness is 145 miles from our base, so we group surveys and installs into planned runs to Highlands, usually two or three jobs over consecutive days. It adds a week or two to the lead time, not to the price.

Does solar work in Inverness's weather?

It does. Panels generate from daylight rather than heat, and overcast days still produce 20 to 40% of peak output. Highland homes see very long summer days, with generation from 4am to 10pm in June, and higher electricity use in winter, which is exactly the profile a battery plus a smart off-peak tariff is built for. With a battery the bright spells are stored for the evening instead of exported, which is what makes the numbers work in Highlands.

Do I need planning permission from The Highland Council?

For most houses in Inverness, no. Roof-mounted solar is permitted development in Scotland unless the building is listed or sits in a conservation area with specific restrictions. We check your address against The Highland Council's conservation-area maps before quoting and handle any application that's needed.

How much does solar cost in Inverness?

Our fully installed packages are £5,995 for a 4.3 kW solar-only system and £8,995 with a 5.1 kWh battery, at 0% VAT until 31 March 2027. Every Inverness quote is one fixed figure including scaffold, certification and paperwork.
