Edinburgh's measured solar output against London's, 10.6 vs 12.2 kWh a day. University of Edinburgh study.
Every solar and battery install is VAT-free until then. It goes to 5% the next day.
What suppliers currently pay for exported power. Certification is included so you qualify.
Edinburgh's housing runs from Georgian and Victorian stone terraces in the New Town and Marchmont, bungalows across Corstorphine and Blackhall, and modern estates in Leith and the Gyle. Large parts of central Edinburgh sit in conservation areas or the World Heritage Site, where panels visible from the street usually need planning consent. We prepare the drawings for the council and specify all-black in-roof panels that get approved more often. The east coast is also measurably drier and sunnier than the west.
Whatever the roof, the process is the same. We lay the panels out on aerial imagery of your house, size the battery from your bills, and send one fixed price within 48 hours. Only when you approve the design do we book a survey, and only after the survey do we take a deposit.
Most Edinburgh households use their electricity in the evening, after the panels have stopped. A 5.1 kWh or 10.2 kWh battery keeps the day's surplus for the 5 to 10pm peak, and in winter charges overnight on an off-peak tariff at around a quarter of the 26.32p price-cap rate. Nearly every system we design from Portobello to Corstorphine includes storage for that reason. More on batteries
Roof-mounted solar on a house is permitted development across Scotland, including Edinburgh, provided the panels project no more than one metre and the building isn't listed. Conservation areas carry extra conditions, so we check your address against City of Edinburgh Council's conservation-area maps before quoting and prepare any drawings needed. Your install is also notified to the local network operator as part of the job.
There is no Home Energy Scotland grant or loan for solar PV. It was withdrawn on 6 June 2024. What Edinburgh homeowners do get is 0% VAT on the whole installation until 31 March 2027, Smart Export Guarantee payments of 15 to 25p a unit for exported power, and for eligible households ECO4 support until the end of 2026. Yes. We cover every Edinburgh postcode in EH1–EH17 and the surrounding Lothians area, from Portobello to Corstorphine. Edinburgh is 15 miles from our base, about 25 minutes by van, so surveys and installs are easy to fit in.
It does. Panels generate from daylight rather than heat, and overcast days still produce 20 to 40% of peak output. Large parts of central Edinburgh sit in conservation areas or the World Heritage Site, where panels visible from the street usually need planning consent. With a battery the bright spells are stored for the evening instead of exported, which is what makes the numbers work in Lothians.
For most houses in Edinburgh, no. Roof-mounted solar is permitted development in Scotland unless the building is listed or sits in a conservation area with specific restrictions. We check your address against City of Edinburgh Council's conservation-area maps before quoting and handle any application that's needed.
